Significant strike

Any strike thrown at distance, plus power strikes in the clinch and on the ground. Most fight analysis starts here.

UFC Stats (FightMetric) counts every strike thrown and landed, and marks a strike significant when it is thrown at distance or, in the clinch or on the ground, with power. Light strikes in close are counted in total strikes but not significant ones.

Significant strikes are split by target (head, body, leg) and by position (distance, clinch, ground). Those splits are how a fighter's style shows up in numbers: a kickboxer lands at distance and to the legs, a wrestler lands on the ground.

The common mistake

Career totals reward long careers and long fights. Compare fighters on rates per 15 minutes, never on raw totals.
